Laura, a recent Mater Education Certificate III in Health Services Assistance graduate, was born and raised in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago and has used her qualification to become a Nursing Assistant at an Aged Care Home and a Personal Carer in Brisbane.
Laura recalls her childhood, and growing up. “We didn't have much growing up but my parents did their best to always provide food on the table. Even the days when we had nothing, they would be helping a relative with a place to stay or call home. No matter what our situation was, they were always ready to open our home to anyone.”
This compassionate nature instilled in Laura from her upbringing inspired her to turn her passion of caring for others into a profession.
“Helping others makes me feel good about myself and good that I've made someone’s day a little bit better.”
She started her journey by attending one of Mater Education’s Open Day’s.
“I vividly remember our tour guide and how passionate he was about his career. He said to me, ‘You have empathy and that's what we look for in this field. You'll do great!’ with the biggest smile. Everyone was so happy and welcoming.”
“During my studies, I felt completely supported and encouraged. My tutor, Chris, was an incredibly motivating and uplifting tutor who made all the learning fun. I loved each day at my week of placement in rehab and was lucky enough to get two extra days of placement after asking if it was possible.”
Laura is truly passionate about her career and finds fulfilment from helping others. “My career in healthcare has been very rewarding. It’s my job to contribute to my patient’s day and make them feel as though they have someone to count on. Finishing a shift knowing I've put a smile on someone's face is my goal, every day.”
